ANKARA - Arkeolog asal Itali mengumumkan sebuah penemuan situs di Turki yang dinamakan "gerbang menuju neraka" (gate to hell). Situs reruntuhan ini terletak di wilayah barat daya Turki.Dilansir Discovery, Minggu (31/3/2013), disebut juga sebagai Gerbang Pluto, menurut tradisi dan mitologi Yunani-Romawi, situs ini merupakan portal ke "dunia bawah". Lokasi situs ini berada di kota Phrygian Hierapolis kuno, yang kini dinamakan Pamukkale.
Konon, situs tersebut mengandung uap mephitic (gas berbahaya) yang mematikan. "Ruang ini penuh dengan uap yang sangat berkabut dan padat, yang nyaris tidak bisa dilihat bagian permukaannya," tulis ahli geografi lawas dari Yunani, Strabo.
Ia mengatakan, hewan yang mencoba masuk ke dalam bisa mati secara mendadak. "Saya melemparkan burung pipit dan mereka segera menghembuskan nafas terakhir dan jatuh," tuturnya.
Situs ini diumumkan bulan ini dalam sebuah konferensi tentang arkeologi Italia di Istanbul, Turki. Temuan ini dibuat oleh tim yang dipimpin Francesco D'Andria, yang merupakan profesor arkeologi klasik di University of Salento.
Kota dengan peradaban Hellenistik ini tumbuh menjadi sebuah kota Romawi yang berkembang. Pada masanya, kota ini memiliki kuil, teater, serta sumber mata air panas suci yang terkenal.
Kabarnya, air tersebut bisa digunakan untuk penyembuhan "Kami menemukan Plutonium dengan rekonstruksi ulang pada rute dari mata air panas," ujar D'Andria.
Arkeolog melakukan rekonstruksi digital untuk memperlihatkan gambaran situs Plutonium secara keseluruhan. Menurut D'Andria, situs ini merupakan tempat yang digunakan untuk ritual inkubasi.
Situs yang pernah berjaya hingga abad ke-4 masehi ini telah meninggalkan reruntuhan, yang diyakini hancur akibat gempa bumi. Arkeolog menemukan peninggalan bersejarah seperti prasasti dengan dedikasi untuk para dewa dunia bawah (underworld).DARI: OKEZONE.COM
